Maybe there's a reason not to, but I figured this would be easier than updating the version regularly.

The ^ means the same thing as your change: use the latest in the 2.x series. Well, slightly different: it means "use at least the specified version, but get me the latest minor and patchlevel within the same major version."

So my position would be that this is not necessary and actually discards some information about a minimum version.
