There is a branch, sb-1723, with good progress in this direction but it needs further debugging.

Any updates on this issue? just faced the same issue while trying to translate static content.

Not so far. Interested in resuming work on this but it hasn't been a priority for our clients at this stage. It's something that could be pursued through Apostrophe enterprise support:
