I tried to upload a picture, but all my picture files were too big to upload,
and I
wasn't smart enough to figure out how to make them smaller. Again, I didn't get
any
pictures posted.

Besides that, a majority of the videos played. I noticed that some of the
quicktime
videos didn't fully load.

This seems a bit bizarre to have to goto another site (and create an account) to
upload media - no way to distribute directly from within ourmedia?

There is now a landing page for uploading media -
http://beta.ourmedia.org/upload.
Options listed include 1) download and use the SpinXpress;2)upload media
directly to
the Internet Archive; 3) upload media to blip.tv and check the box to
cross-upload
your work to the Internet Archive. Does this mean that for the time being there
will
be no web based solution for uploading and distributing media? If this is the
case we
can mark this as fixed and create a new 'enhancement' issue for a web based
solution.

Eric is working on an uploader embed or widget. Does this integrate somehow w/
SpinXpress? If so, will this be a solution to upload and distribute to multiple
sites
and services?
There also is an effort forming to create a unified solution in the Drupal
community.
As there's already interest Ourmedia/Internet archive integration, I suggest we
see
if we can collaborate.

Ok...I am on this and have a working prototype that is standalone. It needs to
be
integrated into the ourmedia framework to leverage the archive.org credentials
that
are currently stored there.
The uploader is a web based service that can embed on any web page. It
provides the
basic fields for uploading and currently offers single file publishing with
progress
to archive.org, with redirect to the newly created ourmedia node. It's totally
a
work in progress and could be up or down at any moment, but you can check it out
here: http://upload.ourmedia.org/

Great to see! An embeddable uploader will be a great feature. Is the current
plan to
have the uploads go to archive only? Also wondering if this will be a Drupal
module.
Reason being, is that would enable this feature to be on countless other sites.
Also
will provide an opportunity to get an assist from several other developers
working on
a similar solution.
http://groups.drupal.org/node/16846
I think an 'Ourmedia/Outhink' branded embeddable uploader that could distribute
multiple formats (audio/video/photos) to multiple services would be the killer
app!

Yes...adding multiple destinations and possibly adding in your own hosting site
(Enter your ftp username/password) would be a goal.
Right now I just want to test through with archive.org, see what problems arise
and
then extend in the future.
Ourmedia has some historical ties with archive.org that make doing this pairing
initially attractive.
I am also not sure how excited archive.org is with having an upload widget to
their
repository on every site. That still needs to be examined.

Sounds like there could be variations depending on the use case. Not sure
if/how/when
Drupal might come into play, but this again should be a great point of entry -

It looks like a collaborative effort between some of the top developers in the
media
space is coming together and there are already people excited to help with
integration. Good stuff all around!

Just wanted to tie in this related issue regarding the costs/benefits of using
Kaltura module and service -
http://code.google.com/p/ourmedia3/issues/detail?id=73
As noted, they already provide some nice features for uploading and integrating
media
(including archive.org). Unclear if/how they provide a way to 'push' media out
to
other video, audio, and photo sharing sites.
Very curious to get Eric's take on this.

I've tested the uploader a few times (audio, video, photo) and it seems to
work.
Couple questions/comments so far...
1) will you be required to enter your archive login/password every time you
upload
media (even if you're signed in to ourmedia)?
2) the creative commons options in the license field seem confusing without any
additional information about each type of license
3) will there be a way to upload multiple files at a time?
4) will the detail pages for each media type be consistent with what's on the
current
site?
Original comment by gus...@gmail.com

this is a work in progress, so does not make much sense to be testing it yet.
1) yes. we do not want to store passwords. "just say no" until the world has
something like openid really
working.
2) agreed. this is straight from their site. we will replace with more
friendly wording.
3) no, but there should be. This requires a lot of changes to support, but
would be valuable to many people.
4) consistent in what way? the media pages in the new theme have less
information that the production site.
most of the other theme changes to media pages are just cosmetic.

Just a real quick test to see if the basic functionality worked. Have we
established
the features that would make this good to go (at least for the relaunch)? In
terms of
detail on the media pages, I was referring to the many fields (details, advanced
details) specific to each media type.
Also curious to hear if anyone else has any thoughts on if/how we might be able
to
leverage the Kaltura module and network. Most of the desired features for the
Ourmedia uploader (Upload media in any format, record from webcam, multiple file
upload/import, bulk-upload via FTP) have already been developed, it may be
worthwhile
to see if we could utilize.

Thanks for clarification Gus. Yes, we need more media fields, mainly tags. I
have written up some rough notes
on features that I will post to wiki and we can all discuss.
Someone needs to evaluate the Kaltura offering to see how it might fit with
Ourmedia.
We also need to evaluate costs of using Kaltura, particularly with respect to
spam.

I've been doing some further evaluation of Kaltura and will post in the related
thread shortly. These links provide a good overview of how their
uploader/content
ingestion works -

The problem with the Kultura solution is ourmedia does NOT want to be in the
business
of hosting media directly.
We don't really want to "ingest" media, we want to distribute it to the "best"
location and then help the user provide context around that media.
The uploader I built specifically bundles up user data in an archive.org
specified
format and distributes delivers the file to them via a robust retry mechanism
to deal
with their common server failures/timeouts.
We have the expertise in the stuff that is already built, bringing in a third
party
solution that has a lot of bells and whistles can many times cause extra
distraction
from accomplishing the goals. Which I believe is restore archive.org/ourmedia
upload
capabilities via a web interface.

Kultura in this context would be as a way to upload to Archive (not Ourmedia).
Reference to ingestion was to Kaltura's hosting/CDN and mainly for comparison.
Even
if we don't use Kaltura for uploading, there may be some value in the
distribution/syndication/recommendation/remix standpoint. More soon...

Boris pointed out yet another Drupal solution for upload to multiple sites -
http://drupal.org/node/353669 - as they've discontinued that feature (and I'm
not
sure if it's a focus of Kultura), there's a big opportunity.
Relatedly, it turns out the media sprint Arthur was mentioning in this thread is
happening right now - http://groups.drupal.org/node/16846. I've been chatting
with
all the folks involved in the sprint and they all agree that a regular Dojo
session
on media is appropriate. This is something that I'll coordinate.
I'd say this a pretty good time to bring what y'all have been working on to the
table.
