Channels content building #32

Closed GoogleCodeExporter closed 9 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
What steps will reproduce the problem?
Set up a channel, not bad, though when I was done there was no “join”
button on the channel. Where do I go to add a video or other content to the
channel, how do I build it????

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
See above.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
Version beta - OS and browser unknown

Please provide any additional information below.

On the beta page for channels (http://beta.channels.ourmedia.org/), when you
click
through to the channel, we're not seeing any media content apart from the
default
Ourmedia promotional video.

Channels Jay and Ryanne will create
   1. Rainforest Action Network (RAN)
   2. politicalvideo.org
   3. Ripe for REMIX (collection mashup source material)
   4. Feminist Majority
   5. Indigenous Channel (media by/for indigenous people)
   6. Remixed Right (a channel for killer mashups)
   7. Abstract and loving it (artsy videos? jay's mad crazy channel?)
   8. Church Channel / God Kick
   9. Women Vloggers
  10. Digital Rights (concerned with digital media rights, creative commons, etc)

This isn't really a defect, but kind of goes with the rest of the feedback
under this
issue. It's just here for reference (so we won't lose this)

I don't see any media on the channel page and it looks pretty random

Create Channel Item has much to be desired for those who can actually find it

Aaron Winborn, the module developer, informed me that ALPHA version of the
Embedded
media module (http://drupal.org/project/emfield) module should be considered
production ready for Video and image support; audio support is forthcoming.

The module already includes the key features we need:

* Embedded Video Field module already supports YouTube, Google, Blip.TV, Revver,
MySpace, MetaCafe, Last.fm, JumpCut, BrightCove, SevenLoad, Spike TV, Daily
Motion,
Veoh, Vimeo, Tudou, imeem, Guba, and Live Video video formats.

* Embedded Image Field module currently supports Flickr, Imageshack, Picassa and
Photobucket images. It creates a field that you can paste the url from, for
instance,
a Flickr photo into, which will then display that photo in a configurable size,
with
a link either to the node or to the original page from Flickr.

* Embedded Audio Field module supports third party audio content, such as from
Odeo,
Podcast Alley, and podOmatic.

* Embedded Media Import is for importing photosets, playlists, and the like.

* Embedded Media Thumbnail module will allow editors to override the thumbnails
of
videos with their own, with a simple upload field. Activate the module, then
check
the new box in any defined video fields to allow custom thumbnails.

In combination with FeedAPI (http://drupal.org/project/feedapi)/Feed Element
Mapper
(http://drupal.org/project/feedapi_mapper), it's easy to create feeds of
embedded
third-party videos. A demo and tutorial can be found here -
zivtech

This will ensure consistent presentation of media (audio, video, images) in
both the
detail pages, landing pages (front page, channels), individual channels,
producer/user profiles and directories.

I strongly recommend we implement this if possible.

Issue 14 has been merged into this issue.

After further research, I recommend we implement the following -

Media - Separate the one 'channel item' out by media (audio, video, photo);
allow the
user to choose between upload or embed media.

Additional content types - Give users and/or editors the ability to create
articles,
events, opportunities (jobs, funding, volunteer, etc.), and projects.

This would allow for greater control of how the content is produced (ie.
created or
submitted), distributed (each content type can have a specific set of
distribution
options), and displayed. This also would allow for targeted ads, services, and
learning resources.

Additional info, screenshots, inspiration can be found here -

Marked as wontfix until we have a chance to review them, so that new issues
are shown clearly.
