If you do not have an E-ink Kindle, then you will need to use no later then Kindle for Mac 1.31. See this post for details: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showpost.php?p=3819708&postcount=508
I thought that was just for kfx files, not azw3
If you downloaded it with Kindle for Mac 1.33, it is likely a KFX file. What are the other file types in the same folder?
I downloaded it with "Download & Transfer via USB" on the "manage my content" page on amazon. It specifically says it is an AZW3 file in calibre and in the folder.
For that method, you need to choose an E-ink Kindle for the device (not a Fire) and enter the serial number into DeDRM's customization. Copy and paste the serial number from your content and devices page at Amazon.
I do not have a kindle device. I only read on either the kindle iPhone app or kindle for Mac app.
So again, if you do not have an E-ink Kindle on your account to choose for "download & transfer via USB", then you will need to download with Kindle for Mac. See the link I gave above.
I'm trying to tell you that I downloaded the file to my computer with the "Download & Transfer via USB" and then imported that file (which is an AZW3 file) into Calibre manually. The problem is that Calibre is not removing the DRM despite having the De-DRM plugin installed. I think the issue is that I do not have a key or serial number. I'm trying to figure out how to get around this problem.
And I am trying to tell you that "download & transfer" requires an E-ink Kindle to get a file that can be decrypted. What device did you choose when downloading the azw3 from the website? If it was anything other than an E-ink Kindle, DeDRM can't decrypt it. If you don't have an E-ink Kindle, then you'll need to look at the info at the link above to get a copy of the book from Kindle for Mac which can be decrypted.
It just said "kindle" when I chose to download it, but I do not have a kindle. I also tried the Kindle for Mac download method, but it gave me the exact same file and it had the exact same issues when imported into Calibre. Once again, I think the issue is that I do not have a key entered in for the "Kindle for Mac" portion of the plug in.
You must have some sort of Kindle on your account for that to be an option. An old device you no longer have?
DeDRM will retrieve the key for Kindle for Mac on the same machine and user as calibre with DeDRM.
What do you mean it will retrieve the key? It hasn't done that.
It will when everything is set up correctly. All the info needed is at the link above. If it's still not working, post a log: https://github.com/apprenticeharper/DeDRM_tools/blob/master/FAQs.md#i-cannot-solve-my-problem-with-the-dedrm-plugin-and-now-i-need-to-post-a-log-how-do-i-do-that
