8 years ago Is the book that won't unlock a large file? A couple people have reported having that issue. It could be a bug with it timing out too soon.
As for the other books only decrypting in debug mode, are you able to re-open calibre in debug mode from within calibre by choosing that option under the Preferences menu? Or can you only open it that way from the command line?

Yes. Indeed that is how I restarted in Debug mode to produce the above logs.

It's definately a large file. The file that won't unlock is 16.5 MB according to calibre. When I sort my library by file size that is the 7th largest file in my library of 331 books. The files which are bigger are a couple of dictionaries, an encyclopedia, a Spanish text book, a copy of the Bible, and Words of Radiance (by Brandon Sanderson). I can't recall if any of them came with DRM originally, but all are unlocked at this point.

8 years ago Yes, that's larger than most ebooks. I have been able to decrypt kindle books that size or a bit larger, but I'm using the 64-bit Windows version of calibre. I suspect that's the problem though since you're able to decrypt other books from the same account/device. Hopefully, Apprentice Harper can see what might be done.
As for the other ones not decrypting at first, have you checked to see if it's repeatable? Or maybe the DeDRM plugin just didn't load correctly that time?

8 years ago Seeing as you've had some success on a different system, I might try that. I have access to several VMs of both Linux and Windows varieties.
I removed the two books which I was successfully able to unlock in debug mode from my library, restarted calibre in normal mode and tried reimporting them from the Kindle. One of those books did successfully import this time. The other did not. After removing the unlocked copy again and switching back to debug mode, I was again able to import it and have it unlock in the process in the process. So I've got one book where this is repeatable.
Since it got mentioned, I'm using the Mac version, in case that wasn't clear from the logs.

8 years ago Hard to say what's happening since it occurs when you don't have the log. And, of course, debug mode should behave the same. All I can suggest is seeing what happens on a different system or maybe re-installing on this one.

8 years ago The book that is failing is a Topaz file. The decryption succeeds, but the conversion from topaz format to something that calibre can handle seems to fail. There's no clues in the log. I suggest trying to stand-along tool, which might work (if it's calibre timing out, for example) or might provide more info on the error.

8 years ago It looks like Amazon have introduced a new tag into the Topaz format. Two others have reported similar problems.
Anyone with a problem with a Topaz book should post an import log, and the book file used in that import to this thread. (As rpspringuel has done here.) That way I can verify that a fix for this report fixes other problems too. (Once I have a fix - Topaz is complex!)

8 years ago Oh - if anyone fancies having a go themselves, the problem is almost certainly in the tags definition in convert2xml.py. There are some debug flags you can turn on in that file to get info on what's wrong. Be warned - the debug options output a LOT of info. Look for the first error.

8 years ago Thank you for those. I can now reproduce your (xapim's) problem. Unfortunately, it's a different problem to rpspriguel's error (which I have now fixed). I'll work on this problem next, now that I've got into Topaz debugging a bit. Let's hope it's as fixable. The 6.4.1 soon to be uploaded will not fix xapim's problem.

8 years ago xapim: I've just pushed a fix for your bug, but I haven't made a full release yet, seeing as there's another Topaz bug just been reported. If you get the source you should be able to get things working for your four (very small!) Topaz books.

8 years ago Hi again apprenticeharper i saw the changes u did to the genbook.py so i copied the code to notepad ++ and created a new file and replaced it for the one in the DeDRM_plugin.zip uninstalled the plugin installed it again and restarted calibre also checked in app data roaming calibre plugins folder if the zip had the file i modified restarted calibre again in debug mode added the books and converted all worked fine thanks very much im sure amazon will keep making changes to topaz books so there will always be a challenge to dedrm those books

8 years ago v6.4.1 did successfully unlock my book on import, but I had to have calibre in debug mode in order for it to work. Of course this makes it really difficult to tell what's going on because there is no debug log of the failure to examine. Does anyone have any idea on how one might get around this to get some diagnostic information from the "normal" mode so that it would be possible to diagnose (and fix) the problem?

8 years ago When in non-debug mode, check the plugin's customisation dialogs to make sure there's a default kindle key in there. Perhaps, somehow, the debug and normal mode are getting different preferences?
You could also try (for diagnostic purposes) adding the PID for that specific book to the list of 'Mobipocket' PIDs in the plugin's customisation dialogs. That will test whether it's the actual decryption, or the obtaining of the book key that's failing.
(The PID is the eight character code that appears in the last 'Trying' line before the 'Book Key Found!' line of the log.)
Finally, you might report this to Kovid at the calibre support site, although giving a test case is going to be tricky, since Kovid won't have anything to do with the DeDRM plugin. Perhaps a general report that an import plugin is failing in ordinary mode, but succeeding in debug mode will do.

8 years ago I've opened this thread at mobileread.com to try and get as much help as Kovid (and any other expert over there) is willing and able to provide (without naming the DeDRM plugin, which would be against that site's policies).
I'll try the PID over the weekend. Unfortunately I have a deadline to meet today that will prevent me from doing anything sooner.

8 years ago I've checked and in non-debug mode, the plugin does show the appropriate keys.
Further, I tried the PID and got the same results. When in non-debug mode the book was not decrypted on import, but when in debug mode it was. This test was done on a 10.11.4 VM running calibre 2.55.0.
Are there any timing or threading issues in the decrypting process?

8 years ago All known Topaz issues are fixed. Any further Topaz problems should be in a new issue. I'll start a new issue for the problem with broken pipes.

1 year ago I have a Kindle eBook with a .azw extension that reports as .tpz on erroring out the title is Thirty Years That Changed the World The Book Acts for Today by Michael Green it is a 3,033 KB File, I'm using DeDRM_tools_7.2.1.zip it unlocks All Previous .azw & .mobi files with no problem using both the PC ID & a Kindle PW ID - - This one Title that calibre reports as a .tpz file on error out. Any Help Appreciated !!!! Thanks

1 year ago 5.26 64 bit - I do not believe that moving to a newer version will not change the fact, of unlocking this !!! It unlocks ALL Previous .azw .azw3 & .mobi titles unlock perfectly ????

1 year ago Just making sure you weren't on calibre 6 because you'd need DeDRM 10.0.3 for that. You might actually have luck with older calibre 4.23 and DeDRM 6.8.1.

1 year ago Thanks !!! Used the portable apps version on a Flash Drive to use the older calibre 4.23 and DeDRM 6.8.1. works to get the HTMLZ version... A lot of trouble to go though ....

I have 3 books which are relatively recent purchases on my Kindle which I'm adding to my calibre library for the first time. When I added them to the library they did not have their DRM removed. So after updating DeDRM and calibre I tried again to the same result. I also tried downloading them using Kindle for Mac and importing them from those files, and again the DRM stayed in tact. The books are added to the library (two in azw1 format, one in azw when working form the Kindle, the azw1 ones become tpz format when working from Kindle for Mac downloads), I just can't do anything with them (other than put them back on the device they came from).
After restarting calibre in debug mode, and trying again, two of the books did import correctly (from the Kindle) and are now in my library DRM free. The third, however, is not . Below is the (anonymized) log from the debug sessions (the first from when I was importing from the Kindle, the second from Kindle for Mac). Any advice on why the import would work in debug mode but not regular mode for the first two books and why it won't work at all for the third is appreciated.
