DRM removal happens when you first add the book, not during conversion. Here's how to get the log:

it says can't decode library or rented books. Do I have to purchase books to be able to dedrm?

Well, DeDRM has removed the DRM on the one book and the other didn't have DRM. Otherwise, I don't know what the issue is. I'd try removing and re-adding the book. If that doesn't work, then I suggest trying DeDRM 6.8.1 with calibre 4.23.

That is not a problem with DRM removal, it is an error during conversion to another format. You will have to ask for help with that issue in the calibre conversion forum.
