Instructions for DeDRM Macintosh Application and Kindle for Mac eBooks #919

Open KarlBunker opened 4 years ago

... There aren't any. the DeDRM ReadMe file for DeDRM Macintosh Application includes configuration instructions for eInk Kindle, Barnes & Noble, eReader and Mobipocket. Nothing about Kindle for Mac eBooks and where/how one might find the ".k4i" files the Configure dialog asks for.

This seems like a major oversight.

From the Mac App ReadMe:

It works without manual configuration with Kindle for Mac ebooks, Adobe Digital Editions Adept ePub and PDF ebooks, and Barnes & Noble NOOK Study ebooks.

That would be nice, but it's not working for me. (Previous versions of the DeDRM app have worked.) I get an alert saying the eBook couldn't be decrypted. The DeDRM log file is empty.

What version of Kindle for Mac? And are you on Catalina?

KarlBunker commented 4 years ago

Not on Catalina. I just now tried updating to the latest Kindle for Mac, with the result that I now have different problems using DeDRM. I used to use DeDRM by downloading a Kindle book, then opening it in Kindle for Mac, and then looking for the most recently modified .azw file in my My Kindle Content folder and dragging that to the DeDRM app icon. With the current Kindle for Mac, there aren't any recently modified .azw files, just "EBOK" folders. Dragging these to the DeDRM app doesn't work.

So again, some instructions in the DeDRM ReadMe might be helpful ...

I found this information helpful in getting the latest version of Kindle for Mac (1.26.1) to work. If you've got it working properly, you'll find the azw inside the EBOK folder.

However, if you're not on Catalina, you're probably better off rolling back to 1.23.1, or even 1.17. See Methods 1 & 2 here

Thanks for the info, ZolaLa9. I've reverted to old versions of DeDRM and Kindle for Mac and that's working. Here's hoping I die before any circumstances come along that force me to update to Catalina. 😬

I was terrified at the prospects of updating to Catalina. BUT, the good news is that it CAN work.
