Is Aptana Alive? #387

Open danallendotcom opened 8 years ago

danallendotcom commented 8 years ago

I've been running Aptana since 2011.

Today, looking at Aptana's website, twitter and Wikipedia article, I don't see anything indicating activity since 2015. The wikipedia article says Studio v 3 is under development. That seems pretty old, since Studio v 3 was released in 2014.

I was prompted to look into this by a thread somewhere that suggested we need move off Aptana onto Eclipse.

Aptana 3.6 is running just fine for me today, but is it a corpse on my computer?

Studio 3.6.1 got released around 2014, sorry I thought it was recently released. Aptana was aquired by Appcelerator, and Appcelerator was aquired by Axway, but development is still going on, https://techcrunch.com/2016/01/17/axway-acquires-mobile-app-development-platform-appcelerator/

looking into it it seems Aptana studio is dead, and the updates we see here on github are for Appcelerator Studio IDE which costs for indies 36.00 a month subscription. https://www.appcelerator.com/pricing/

2 years is too much in this business... I'm trying Atom (https://atom.io/), from GitHub. Adding packages and some tweaks can made comfortable environment for development.

Suggestions, alternatives?

At per the prices High to Low:

  1. WebStorm (All in One complete IDE, Paid)
  2. SublimeText (Lightweight and sleek editor, Paid but costs much less)
  3. VisualStudio Code (High profile Node.js and JS development, only a text editor like SublimeText, Free and OS)
  4. Brackets, Atom, etc. (Free and OS)
  5. VIM (The ultimate, Free and OS)

:-)

Aptana studio may be dead, but it's still the best! There's no other better IDE that has such a wonderful FTP/sFTP plugin integrated and that's the main reason that I still use Aptana.

webward09 commented 7 years ago

a wonderful FTP/sFTP plugin

so long as you don't need to use up to date SSH certificates (https://github.com/aptana/studio3/issues/342)

klys commented 7 years ago

Someone have a working Aptana version that can you upload?

The ones on the website try to download a bunch of dependency and it fail a least on my machine.

webward09 commented 7 years ago

Is this any use to you? Not the most recent version but you may be able to upgrade http://www.filedropper.com/aptanastudio3setup322

klys commented 7 years ago

webward09 thank you, im downloading and testing it.

I hope this installer version work correctly.

emco83 commented 7 years ago

After lot of testing with couple of IDE programs, finally I've found the alternative: Atom! With this IDE and additional ftp-remote-edit package I can work fast on remote server without creating a local project.

Atom IDE works faster than Aptana and it has tremendous choice of packages. Totally recommended!

Such a shame for Aptana, it was very nice IDE...well, nothing is eternal.

But there are commits in the last days https://github.com/aptana/studio3/commits/development Aptana seams to be alive...

laned130 commented 6 years ago

There may be commits on GitHub, but the download link on the Aptana.com website doesn't work, and hasn't worked for almost a year according to this: https://github.com/aptana/studio3/issues/403 You can get the installer from GitHub of course, but failing to fix the download link on the project website doesn't really give the impression that they actually want you to use it!

The closest alternative would be https://netbeans.org and was not mentioned in the thread.

mpf82 commented 6 years ago

@gagarine How so? The Netbeans Python plugin is only compatible with 8.1 and released in 2015.

Judging from the forum activity I would assume that this is just as dead as Aptana.

And even if this is not about Python, the Netbeans Roadmap shows that the last release was in 2016 - looks also pretty dead to me.

@mpf82 because Oracle is in the process to give the code to apache fondation. It's seem pretty active https://blogs.apache.org/netbeans/ .

Perhaps I should have given this links: https://netbeans.apache.org/
