I just found a WiFi provisioning example here: /esp/esp-idf/examples/provisioning/softap_prov It might be a smoother implementation than the current one. It is worth checking out.

Also take a look at esp-idf/examples/wifi/. What are espnow and smartconfig? They might be useful.
