I figured out how to make version 1.2 work with Firefox 5. First, make sure
Firefox 5 isn't running.
Open the file "Macintosh HD/Users/your_user/Library/Application
Support/Firefox/Profiles/your_profile/extensions/colesbury@gmail.com/install.rdf
" with TextEdit.
Change the line "<em:maxVersion>4.0.*" to "<em:maxVersion>5.0.*"
Open Firefox 5, check the addons. You may need to tell it to check for updates.

disappeared, but still "(Disabled)", how I can enable it? Also I did try run it

Worked for me, too. It's very lame that Mozilla does not offer such a basic
function and I thank you all for stepping up where they've slacked off.

@8, how does that make FF 5 read PDFs?

It doesn't but eventually it wil come with Firefox embedded. I believe mozilla
will 1st release as an extension, then embed it later. They have given an
approx. time frame of 3 months to get basic functionality ready.

The fix in @1 works (thanks!!) The key is that you have to be running v1.2 of
the plugin (found here:
http://firefox-mac-pdf.s3.amazonaws.com/fx-quartz-pdf-1.2.0.xpi).

I have gotten myself into a box trying to follow the excellent advice in @1 and
@12. By doing things in the wrong order, long story short, I uninstalled
Firefox-Mac-PDF 1.1.3, and tried to install 1.2.0, which was rejected by FF 5
because it is "incompatible with FireFox 5.0". So the colesbury file to edit
isn't there in my extensions folder.
Is there any way work around this situation short of waiting for a change in
the add-on or in Firefox that fixes it? Any advice gratefully received.
Thanks in advance.

I have finally given up on this extension ever working. Found a plugin that
DOES WORK!
FREE for personal use.

This worked for me. I had to use the "additional clean-up" step as well. Also,
see the notes below the main post for the trick to de-compress the .xpi file:
either change it's file extension to .zip, or else compress and then
de-compress it.

@16, thanks for the help. It turns out, however, that I had already installed
PDF Browser Plugin 2.4.1, as @14 suggested. It's free for personal or
nonprofit use, it works well in 32-bit or 64-bit modes, and seem a little more
elegant than firefox-mac-pdf.
As the reply to the first comment on the macworld article says, this is now
released and is available from CNet at
http://download.cnet.com/3001-2378_4-31480.html?spi=9a67dda9b013a67d0fc9e7a4a042

Again, thanks! Cheers.

Can't someone post a download link of the 5.0.x xpi compatible version? If you
haven't installed FF 4 before it's impossible to modify the xpi. It's a pain
that this plugin is unmaintained and spammed by SchubertIt crappy clunky plugin.

I want to report that the recipe in #1 works with FF 6.0 as well as 4.0 and
5.0, as long as maxVersion is >=6.
#18, please see the link in #16 which in turn contains a link to version 1.2 of
the plugin, which works with 5.0.

The instructions at link given in #17 fix worked for me with Firefox 7.0.1 on
OS 10.6.8. I found that "PDF browser Plugin 2.4.1" (which is Schubert plugin)
hangs FF7.0.1 when rendering complex/large PDF files. This does not happen
with firefox-mac-pdf.

For the fix in #12, do not forget to run FF in 32 bits mode.
Get info on Firefox and click on the Run in 32 bits checkbox
Working with FF 7.0.1
One advantage of firefox-mac-pdf over PDF browser Plugin 2.4.1 is that you can
use the FF search box to search in the PDF like in a webpage.
