MDTF requests to include standard_name and/or long_name in the catalogs. This info is available in some form for the catalog builder to use. The more reliable mid to long-term method is to get this info from the diag out yml tables. This issue tracks the plan including timelines to get this done. Open separate issues for implementations when the plan is ready.
