This is not a ticket but an indicator for what the latest production releases are. Everybody should be assigned to this ticket one way or the other to get informed when a new version with new features or fixes is rolled out.

• 🎃 Navigation

  • Coherence: You have navigation buttons on all major layouts now that allow you to jump back and forth between layouts coherently. This includes the registration (collected material list), tag analysis, site notes, ceramic analysis.
  • History: Below the back button you find a foot step button that shows you a list of the recently viewed layouts in historical order and a list of the last archaeological entities you used. By clicking on those entries you jump straight there and come back to where you were using the back button.
  • little round foot step buttons: Those allow you to jump straight to the archaeological entity they are visually connected to
  • collected material -> ceramic analysis: If you use a sherd processing module (URAP and PASU) a button with a pot icon leads you straight to the sherd processing and the back button goes back to the collected material.

    you now have a filter button that allows you to limit the list of loci / contexts by type and excavator (recorded by)

    by clicking on the header of a column you sort by it

  • shows the results of the ceramic preprocessing under collected material as cross-tab, much as you know it from Excel
  • shows you duplicate categories consolidated. E.g. if you have two separate rows for cookware / rims they will be added and consolidated to one row in the cross-tab view

• 🎃 #1810: The annoying pop-up warning about a potentially too old database can be suppressed until the next download by checking a checkbox.

new features in FileMaker recording

• 🍀 locus relations have an extended user interface and can cross unit boundaries now
• 🍀 registration (collected material registration under "registrar and specialists"):
  • now you can filter and sort
  • navigate to and from collected materials
  • setting and looking up the registration status for a collected material is more intuitive thanks to a new user interface
  • default registration codes are set automatically depending on material type (#1817)
  • "Done" Registration codes can be set in the collected material layout directly (#1797)
• 🍀 The search function is now available in all layouts in the burger menu
• 🍀 #1716: There is a button in the burger menu now that turns on the "temporary free input mode". In that mode you are allowed to type in new identifiers manually, e.g. to create a legacy context or a bunch of collected materials from a former season. Another click on the button gets you back into the normal mode in which identifiers are created automatically.
• 🍀 #1705: When in "temporary free input mode" and logged in as registrar or admin a new button appears in the burger menu that allows you to change a record's identifier. That way you can correct wrong context identifiers, rename ceramic fragments or rename collected material ids. BUT: Use this sparingly and wisely and keep in mind that this feature only changes the identifier of the current record. For instance, if you rename a locus "001" that has a collected material "001-1" the collected material will not be renamed! You have to change that one manually, too.
• 🍀 new field for datum point elevation on the measurements tab
• 🍀 #37: We have a little device now that displays qr codes on an e-paper display to be used in the lab for object photography. It is much easier to use than the Apple Watch trick because it is controlled from within the filemaker recording and the e-paper display is not an active light source.

new features in Kiosk

• 🍀 KioskBridge: ios app for downloading / uploading docks. You don't need the Browser at all anymore on the iPads to download prepared docks or upload them after field work. "KioskBridge" is a native iOS App that handles all the downloading, uploading and the transfer to and from FileMaker for you. The app is not yet available on the App Store and must be installed manually on each iOS device. If you are interested in using KioskBridge, let us know. All 2023 field projects will get equipped with it.

  For all of you who recorded locus/context relations before Summer 2022: Kiosk should add the proper temporal relations automatically to those spatial relations. Please check.
• 🌷 synchronization/housekeeping: Non-Image files are not cluttering the synchronization log with errors anymore.
  If you record audio or video (don't) in FileMaker or add a file that isn't an image file, synchronization or rather the housekeeping part of synchronization reported a bunch of scary red lines with all subsequent synchronization runs. They were never errors and have never stopped synchronization. Now they are fewer and they don't reoccur again in the next synchronization round.

• 🌸 new Narrative View in unit/trench narratives allows you to associate narratives with unit photos.
  It allows you to focus on a single narrative and is also capable of showing SVG files.
• 🌸 The clip in the unit photos filters photos of the same day of the current narrative
• 🌸 Reference navigation: If there is a footstep button next to a text you can use it to jump to any archaeological identifier that can be found in the text
• 🌸 Coordinates from GIS/RTK can be transferred to the recording system #1986
  You can manage control points in the new "Coordinates" UI in the specialists tab on the start page. This feature is meant to find you control points easily again on the ground. There is a corresponding "point repository" in Kiosk where you can also import points from a CSV or Excel file.
• 🌸 You can search for coordinates with the search function that is available on the start page and in burger menus elsewhere.
• 🌸 Reduced Configuration Mode (#1546)
  The configuration ui under admin/configuration shows a reduced set of configuration keys that have been marked most relevant for the field. A button in the Burger menu allows you to switch to the full set of configuration keys.
• 🌸 Search in Configuration (#2002)
  Configuration was notoriously hard to navigate. The new search mechanism now makes it easier to find the right configuration key. Just type in a value you want to change or a part of a key you remember or try whatever might be a hint to the right key.
• 🌸 Simple elevations interface: expand text box size. (#2042)
  Projects using descriptive elevations rather than the numeric elevations will find the layout improved.
• 🧯 New safety catch: If your local server is in an earlier time zone than an ipad the FileMaker database will refuse to start. Always make sure your local server and your ipads are all on the same time and in the same time zone.
• 🌸 registration ui to track collected materials: The new checkbox popup is so improved that we don't need the registration codes as an input field anymore.
• 🌸 collected material by unit/area: when coming back from a collected material the active row in the list is now moved into view (#1990)

🍎 Query & View is the new module in Kiosk's menu. It allows you to query your data with pre-configured queries and view your archaeological record in Kiosk itself. No FileMaker needed.

• You find it in the main menu
• Two buttons in the toolbar allow you to either select a query (the board icon) or go straight to a view by selecting an archaeological identifier from a list.
• wherever you see an archaeological identifier (particularly if it has 👣 ) you can click on it to open a new view.

📣 All projects got updated with the latest improvements in Kiosk and the Recording App with this year's first rollout. While the next killer feature is still in the making (more on that at the end), we have been improving usability and added useful details that we want to share with all of you. ❄️ News for the Recording App ❄️

• ❄️ Month and day get so easily confused in date fields, particularly when inputting legacy data. That's why Kiosk has always shown a Latin representation of your input. NOW it allows you to enter dates in the Latin format almost everywhere where you find a date / date time field. You can even type something short like 2IV89 to get April 2nd 1989 (#2416)
• ❄️ For units/trenches you can record a list of involved people (they don't even have to be team members) and their roles. So far there was only a supervisor. (#2415)
• ❄️ Lots can be highly customized. E.g. they can be automatically numbered either according to locus or unit.You can even allow duplicates (#2490)
• ❄️ Registration can be configured to show not only the bulk number but also the locus/context and unit/trench (#2472)
• ❄️ Collected materials can have a second field for "material" to further specify the material. (#2464)
• ❄️ The Gallery now shows the time when a photo was shot (which can differ from the time of recording) and allows manipulating it. Image popups in dayplans and loci/context photos allow this, too. (#2441)
• ❄️ Site notes got the identifier navigation that we introduced for other description fields. (#2413)
• 🐞Full text search got fixed (#2485)

❄️ News for Kiosk ❄️

• 👺 Orange alert: All images in the file repository that came from importing raw SLR photos had a more or less pronounced orange hue, depending on your camera and environment. While the original files were always unaffected (Kiosk stores but never touches the originals) all other versions of a file would have this colour aberration. It is fixed and all thumbnails for all project's got re-rendered.
  The good side: We can offer now an option to render your thumbnails with a brighter white-balance if you find your thumbnails still too warm. (#2440)
• ❄️ In the file repository you can find collected materials by their description or material type (#2502)
• ❄️ The file repository allows you to search photos by date and date range (#2439)
• ❄️ The file repository now sorts undated images to the end unless you sort using the new option "undated, then latest first" (#2404)
• ❄️ Synchronization offers you a more detailed log now even if the run was simply successful. (#2470)
• ❄️ The Hub shows you when the last synchronization took place (#2445)
• ❄️ The Hub offers a history of events with the new "sync & dock events" menu item (#2445)
• ❄️ The Hub shows a dock's TimeZone whenever there is an explicit TimeZone set (#2442)

• 🪻 Stratigraphic Studio will also analyze your stratigraphic relations and tell you about cycles, contradictions, excess relations and other issues in your archaeological record that you should look into
• 🪻 You can look at whole units or at single loci. In the latter case you get the same results as in the recoding app (see below)
• 🪻 you have access to a bunch of "layout" options. Try them and find your preferred view on your archaeological data.
• 🪻 you can colour the stratigraphic units in the matrix according to tags you applied to loci in the recording.

• 🪻 We can even offer the same Harris Matrix view in FileMaker! Simply click on the new button next to the stratigraphic relations.
• 🪻 In the Recording App you get the immediate relations of the current locus (context, SU) so that you can check your results during recording in the trench

Wilhelm Busch once said "Ein jeder Wunsch wenn er erfüllt, kriegt augenblicklich Junge", which literally means: Each desire once fulfilled will soon have offspring. That's for sure true for Stratigraphic Studio as well. This is work in progress, and we simply could not wait any longer to share this first version with you. Now you might want phasing, adding relations, jumping to the loci, etc.

📣 Full Text Search allows you to search your entire data in a search-engine kind of way IN KIOSK:

• 🌷 Query And View has a new query "Full Text Search". It allows you to search your entire archaeological record.
• 🌷 Instead of just searching for a single word you can search for phrases and even for records that don't contain a certain word.
• 🌷 Search results are presented with excerpts of the match, and they are sorted by relevance.
• 🌷 You can jump from a search result straight to the View that shows the record in Kiosk.
• 🔧 A more technical point: Kiosk now uses the latest PostgreSQL Version 16. That's the database engine that powers Kiosk. Please tell us if you encounter any oddities in your data.

The highlights of this year's summer release:

• 🍸 You can have mutliple charts per query, depending on what you want to focus on.
• 📈 That just the beginning: What charts and queries would you want for your project?
• 🍸 Excel and CSV export in Query and View: Look at the query "What materials were found in ... " to explore Q&Vs new graph feature.
• 🍸 Query and View improved navigation: Quick scroll up to the results or view header, navigation from full text search match to the match in the view
• 🍸 Stratigraphy Studio: Now better in finding and erasing erroneous records in the recording data
• 🍸 Maintenance: Even when in the field you can now easily install new queries, reports and even whole new Kiosk versions.
• ✏️ recording app: sortable headers for collected material lists everywhere
• ✏️ smaller sequence qr codes for object photography and easier focus
