Agent Based Model packages #111

These have been used in archaeological applications recently, maybe worth adding here?

Swarm - A conceptual framework for designing, describing, and conducting experiments on ABMs.

Repast - The Recursive Porous Agent Simulation Toolkit.

NetLogo - A Java-based programmable modeling environment for simulating natural and social phenomena.

Hi, Repast seems to be very interesting, also considering its integrations GIS Also NetLogo seems to be usefull for modeling in archaeology, as well as Swarm. To be honest, this is not really my field, so I think we would need your help, Ben, to test and evaluate the these software. All three of this tools are not in deb repos, so we would need to package them.

Happy to help, do you have a test protocol that I can use?

dncgst commented 9 years ago

Hi all, also NetLogo has GIS (http://ccl.sesp.northwestern.edu/netlogo/docs/gis.html), R (http://r-ext.sourceforge.net/) extensions and many more. I'm not an expert because I just started to study ABM, but I think NetLogo could be part of ArcheOS: it is very popular in ABM and archaeological-ABM, well-documented, pretty user-friendly. Repast seems more powerful, but also more complicated. I decided to start from NetLogo.

HI all, maybe I say something stupid but I was asking Markus Neteler (GRASS GIS main developer) about this topic last time I met him. If I understood well also GRASS GIS should have some modules for this. Am I wrong?

dncgst commented 9 years ago

Ciao Luca,

while there are GIS extensions for several ABM software like Repast and NetLogo[0], I think Markus was talking about the quite old MAGICAL module by Mark Lake[1]. Some more about GRASS and ABM here:

Cheers,

Ciao Domenico,

do you have some experience with these modules? MAybe you or Ben could write a post in ATOR about this, so we can uderstand better the topic and see how to integrate it in ArcheOS in the best way

dncgst commented 9 years ago

Ciao,

sorry, I don't have any experience with GIS extensions for ABMs, since I just started to study NetLogo from the very beginning and I have only basic knowledge of it.

NetLogo comes with a simple tar.gz, you just have to extract it. I think there is no need to build a package for it.

Cheers,
