ps3 media server playing wrong subtitle file or no subtitle file

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Share a folder containing many .avi and .srt files with similar
filenames (i.e., TVShow_Ep01.avi, TVShow_Ep01.srt,
TVShow_Ep02.avi....TVShow_EpXX.avi, TVShow_EpXX.srt)
2. Either the filename or folder path must include unicode characters
3. Play files on PS3 using ps3 media server

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
I expect transcoding of TVshow_Ep01.avi to include TVshow_Ep01.srt. 
However, 1 of three things happens:
1) Video from TVShow_Ep01.avi plays, and subtitles from TVShow_Ep01.srt
shows up - this is what I want to happen every time.
2) Video from TVShow_Ep01.avi plays, but no subtitles are shown
3) Video from TVShow_Ep01.avi plays, and shows subtitles from
TVshow_Ep02.srt instead.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
ps3mediaserver v1.02.1 / Windows XP Pro SP3

If you are transcoding a media file, which engine are you using (mencoder,
avisynth/mencoder, tsmuxer?)

issues described above apply to mencoder, avisynth/mencoder, and
avisynth/ffmpeg.  I read that tsmuxer can't transcode files with subtitles
anyway.

If the media file is in error (or does not play flawlessly), what are the
codec informations of this file (you can use following program:
mediainfo.sourceforge.net) ? 

Video plays fine, just subtitles are unreliable.

I'm not sure how mencoder works in determining which subtitle to play, but
I found .avs files in temp folder when transcoding using avisynth.  I
noticed that anytime I play a file that has no unicode in the filename or
filepath, the long filenames are used in the avs script.  However, when
unicode characters are present in the filename or filepath, the long
filenames of the files are shortened to the 8.3 filenames.  I double
checked in DOS, and found that indeed the 8.3 filenames of the .avi and
.srt of the movies are not always the same as each other (i.e.,
TVshow_Ep01.avi=TVshow~1.avi; TVshow_Ep01.srt=TVshow~3.srt;
TVshow_Ep02.avi=TVshow~2.srt; TVshow_Ep02.srt=TVshow~1.srt; etc -- in this
case transcoding TVshow_Ep01.avi will play TVshow_Ep02.srt when transcoding
with avisynth/mencoder or ffmpeg, since they both have 8.3 filename of
TVshow~1.xxx).  I suppose a rough workaround might be to rename ALL folders
and files using only english text, or to place each .avi and .srt pair in
it's own folder, but that is a lot of hassle, and as most movies
necessitating subtitles are usually foreign language movies, it makes sense
to have foreign characters for their filenames.  Hopefully there is a
solution this issue.

p.s., in some cases non-unicode filenamed files will show soft subtitles
fine when using avisynth, but not when using mencoder alone - but I that is
probably a separate issue altogether.
