Wondering if it could be because of Java version? OS X 10.4 officially only has
java
1.5, when I tried to run pms 1.01 it gave the warning that java 1.6 was needed?
Could
that be the problem?
There is a port of java 1.6 for OS X 10.4 called SoyLatte, but after
"installing" it,
made no difference to the warning message in pms 1.01, however pms 1.02.1 always
worked regardless of the java version.

We changed the Java version for 1.02.1 so that non-leopard users could use the
app.

There might be an issue on 10.4. Could you run the following in terminal?
/Applications/PS3\ Media\ Server.app/Contents/Resources/Java/osx/mencoder --help
Assuming you have the app in Applications. Do you get an error or expected
output (a
list of options)?

I have the same issue (though my mpeg2 files can actually be streamed even if
they are marked as mpeg1 in
my PS3).
Running the help command in terminal gets the following result

Welcome to Darwin!

Server.app/Contents/Resources/Java/osx/mencoder --help

10.4 is not supported at the moment. I'm working on new builds and the next
version
should support 10.4.

Can you try out this build and let me know how it goes? Thanks!

I have tried your new version unfortunatly I dont see any improvement,
althoiugh I also discovered that even
though the mpeg1 marking in my ps3, I can also stream avi xvid decoded but not
my mp4 ripped and encoded
with ps3 preset in Handbrake.
Thanks for your effort and please let me know if you want me to test some omore

What happens when you run /Applications/PS3\ Media\
Server.app/Contents/Resources/Java/osx/mencoder --help now?
Assuming you put the new build in Applications. Are you using Intel or PowerPC?

The same as in my previous post. I copied the PMS package to Applications and I
am
using a PowerPC processor.

Then that's the problem. PMS is Intel only. This might be fixed in the future
but
it's not a very high priority at the moment.
Thanks for your report.

Works just fine for me on my PPC Mac Mini.

Transcoding works? I doubt it, unless you made your own builds :)

I too have a PPC running 10.4.x. The program runs great and plays avi and mp3.
It
does not play mp4 and m4a files. I also have paid for Nullriver and their
software
plays mp4 and m4a as well as avi and mp3, but routinely stutters and shuts
itself
down (I have a registered version, not the 30 minute limit trial). Not to
mention
that Nullriver does not support thumbnails on non intel machines. I REALLY
would
love to see PMS work on PPC machines. Clearly Nullriver has figured how to get
it to
work (just not well) so what would it take to get PMS to support PPC?

I too have a G5 dual 2.o tower. My MP3 and AVI files play fine. AAC audio files
show as a PCM file on the PS3 and
do not play with an Unsupported Data error. MP4 video files in h.264 give the
corrupted data error, and break
the link. Seems like the AAC files in the M4A format are showing up as MPlayer
on the PS3. Any direction on
getting these working would be great.

With Snow Leopard now also dropping PPC support it's unlikely this will ever be
fixed. Native supported files will continue to work but transcoding will not.

I got a fix on the issue ... current version works including transcoding, h264
and multichannel on my DualG5 1.8:
