There should be an option to retrieve the next datapoint after the query range.

Do you mean:

The option to include the next datapoint as well as the data from the range?
A request to fetch only the datapoint after a given datetime?

We have a request for the latter at DLS.

A limit parameter that specifies the maximum number of events received could help achieve this (e.g. limit=1), but I don't think this exists either. I think this could be a useful feature.
