Map centering #604

reference issue #603 if this isn't solving it, then it is getting us much closer to solving it

It looks like this branch/PR has a few commits that may already have been merged, and aren't related to the map centering. It looks like 24ed2be is the commit that has the change we need (a one liner), but that commit also has other changes. Can this be isolated into a single new branch/commit to keep the merge pressure low on the (creaking with weighty sloppy development) paths branch?
