i think it should be optionnal, or at least a Rare item that can be used to PEX a lot, do lootruns and stuff.
The first idea was to have a "farm chest" but actually it seems better to directly drop the item in the player inventory. Let's now discuss what would happen if the inventory is full ?
However it remove a great factor of player satisfaction: Seeing those sweet items laying on the ground and, why not a satisfying sound when you pick them, this could seem like nothing. If you aren't convinced try something easy:
Try to launch
Enter the gungeon, hollow knight, the combat in the batman Arkham games, burnout paradise, super time force, super meat boy, broforce, even the original Doom!
and then disable all VFX, sounds effect, everything you can. It's ready! Now play and feel the huge void filling your soul.
What happened is that your brain need more: He want to FEEL when you pick items, and despite feeling with an haptic suit it's with your hears. -PS: It doesn't mean we can satisfy the player brain without droping items on the ground, but then we need to find solutions (ex: When you get a rare item it appear on your screen with particles and a nice sound like a totem of undying)
the undying totem effect is interesting and used by some rpg servers like RotMC.
In dofus there is no "picking items" on the ground system and it's still satisfying to go on farm sessions
let's check if we can spam the totem effect with a smaller item
We could keep an in-memory chest that contains all loots of the player when he is farming. He would be able to claim those loots at any moment. With infinite rpg inventories it would not be a way to have more slots but only to see the global result of a farming session and avoid dropping items on the ground (which can be lost or not seen, or even in stuck places). It would also go well with the already existing loot chest from Bosses
