Investigate and add additional unit tests

At present there is only a single unit test that is being running on this repository. My expectation is that more are required.

Issue criteria:

Investigate the codebase and determine what additional tests we should add
Implement those tests using Ginkgo
The current unit test that is implemented is failing, we should also fix that as well.
