When using greater than less than brackets in label, similar to how gmail handles email address labels, the brackets now form an element with and open and close containing the portion of the label initially surrounded by the backets.

I think my last push fixes this. Try it out and see if it's ok for you now. I have tried with encoded values and regular strings and it seems to work as excpected for both of them now.
