A README which explained how to use or install the themes would be nice…

Haven't tried. But, I guess sourcing .zsh-theme file in your .zshrc should do the trick.

As I can't even remember how I found this repository last year, I'm not even sure what kind of themes these are…

Also I found a theme in the meantime which is feature full and good documented:
