6 months ago I think this is linked to what you're saying, in that when I remap the application fields to that on my card template, the image, meaning don't go to the fields I set; I believe this could fix that issue.
Currently, we can only select field values from a pre-defined list. It'd be nice to have custom formatting like Yomichan. Something like:
{reading} : {meaning}
