Add an endearing episode of Tom being nice to people right after we introduce him. Maybe he hands a toy from his locker to a neighbor's kid, or helps an old lady load stuff into her car. One sentence at the front of act I.

Consider the "cat" to be an old Garfield plush that Tom finds while digging through the storage unit, probably in a bag of random items.
