Add secondary foils to Tom. Many options are available to Tom for handling his predicament. Most of them end unhappily. Secondary foils have taken these approaches and illustrate what might happen to Tom if he follows them.

Some ideas for breaking down the three characters:

Super Ego, Ego, Id (or in Eric Berne's terminology, Parent, Adult, Child)
Preacher, Fighter, Provider (three estates)
