[FEATURE] Forced assimilation by unit presence in province #18

The game has conditions for:

units_in_province = x & country_units_in_province = [tag/FROM/THIS]

If you combine this with other modifiers you can have an assimilation mechanic that isn't limited by a nation/culture-wide modifier. You could use these conditions to fire an event to give the province a modifier, for example on that gives militancy and assimilation rate, maybe even tension in the region. While it would never be used by the AI, it could give people another tool to model the change in the cultural landscape.

The possibilities are limitless, for example; You can have Germans displace the Polish population in West-Prussia while giving events that move said populations to Poland proper (if it exists).

Or you could model the colonization (war atrocities) of the Japanese in Taiwan and Korea when owned and garrisoned by the player.

Keep in mind that not all modifiers work in pop_types.txt so both of these might not work at all outside of events. Events have also their share of problems, as they can only give assimilation rate, not chance.

Displacing is another can of worms. People need to move to be displaced, they are not assimilated, and therefore need to move somewhere else. That can't be done dynamically with the move_pop command, pops in occupied provinces do not move and even if we just did a modifier that increases migration rate there's always the potential of being able to depopulate a country in a few wars with them. Which shouldn't be possible. Balancing is a big issue.

All that said, I disagree with all your points because:

  1. I do not think it's realistic to have "gunpoint" assimilation. Most (if not all) assimilation policies in the 19th of "cultures occupied by foreign powers" (like Poland) century failed or had very limited success.

  2. I believe that too much direct pop manipulation goes against the spirit of the game. It's mostly the pops calling the shots, and the constant tensions between the government doing what it wants and the population forcing the government to do what they want. If you tip the scales too much to one side, this falls apart.

Displacement is one of the things that I believe could be done if implemented right and in a balanced manner, so you can't just displace the whole population of Poland out of Poland in a century. But I didn't come up with anything that could be done in a dynamic and overall satisfactory way so cases where it happens remain bound to a few historical events (Circassian displacement).

Not if you make sure the province needs to be owned by the original owner.

Sure, but you should be able to promote pop movement from let's say Silesia to Warsaw if you own the area as a Polish puppet state.

Especially in Russia there were laws that prohibited certain ethnic minorities to settle certain parts of the country. Take a look at: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pale_of_Settlement
