Move away from Github? #43

Github will soon be a part of Microsoft and I'm not sure yet, if this is really the direction I want to go.

Therefore I will propably move with all my repositories away from Github. Stay tuned - I'll tell you more details here soon.

What do you think of hosting an own GitLab or Gitea instance on your private server and mirroring your GitHub repos for the beginning? I am sceptical too regarding Microsoft but at the moment it might be too early to leave? 🤔

I'm not about to leave within the next months. And yes, I am also thinking about hosting GitLab on my own server as a mirror just to get a feeling how it works.

There are also other projects where I got involved as well (e.g. Nextcloud) and which may also not leave Github soon - so I think at least for 2018 nothing will change.

IMHO Gitlab is only better if selfhosted. Microsoft as owner of github is not worse than some other private company behind Gitlab.

If you don't want to host yourself, you could take a look at notabug.org. It is based on gogs (ancestor of gutea) and provides git, issue tracker, PRs and wiki.

After thinking about this I decided it is ok to stick with Github. A have a copy of all my repositories anyway and even if Microsoft decides to shut this service down or to ask for a fee, I can still move somewhere else.
