When I mute spotify it normally just pauses the ad and resumes it when the volume is restored (both system and spotify volume).

Can anyone confirm that this works anymore?

Hi, If I understand correctly, you're trying to mute Spotify by yourself. If you are, that's not how Spotifree works. The way it works is that it's polling Spotify every .3 seconds to check if current song is an ad. When an ad is detected, it pauses Spotify, mutes and starts again. When an ad ends, the volume is returned to normal. If what you're telling is that Spotifree does not work as intended, you can try following the troubleshooting guide.

I did, for some reason that didn't help until I restarted Spotify itself -- so I can confirm it works now.
