Doc string generation broken #39

Merge request #40 to fix the doc string generation. It works on my system and should be a good fix for read the docs. Read the docs isn't picking up the bug branch, so I think we should merge branch 39 into master to test it.

Issue is still present. Read the docs picked up branch 39 though, so I can test with that now. I'll keep troubleshooting.
