The same thing with ruby 1.8.7
i solve it in this way. sudo apt-get install memcached sudo apt-get install libevent-dev sudo aptitude install libmemcached-dev libsasl2-dev libmemcached-dbg gem install memcached
No idea why the SASL packages aren't picked up; perhaps reinstalling sasl2 like @yangyijie88 mentions is the fix.
The issue was resolved in 1.5.1 in commit f23c4664d3d62d735c69cd737bd2b32b57af2b24
