Add interface to `modular` #17

Not urgent, but once the API becomes more clearly defined, lets try to link some external code to see how this fits together.

I can use the sao package with the modular code, so for me it's enough. If we don't need anyone else to use it, I would delete this issue. Not sure if @aatmdelissen has a different opinion though.
