I found that Sublime Merge does support renaming commits. Just right click any commit, select "edit" and choose the "edit commit message" option

Thanks for your comment. This was also mentioned here: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=34301925. It does support in-memory rewords, but with significant caveats. I will update the article.
