oh! that is interesting, and yes I can probably track this live in the system,
then return this in the API.
Ryan-- we're unbelievably slammed with issues right now, so unfortunately this
has to wait + get queued up. But I love the feature and have given it the
highest priority for the next release.

For our widget we do not need 'number of opps in db', its not
interesting enough and doesn't change quickly enough to be interesting.
nothing needs to come via api for that.
What we do want to put on the widget is number of people actually
volunteering at any given moment, which is something we will generate with
our database and some math.
We are building a system to track when someone completes a volunteer
opportunity in the real world, and would like to feed that data back into
your system where appropriate.
We're providing a layer between your system and the organizations who
wish to use it. It helps them manage the volunteers, something that's
really lacking in the space. Plus give volunteers rewards for
participating and for feeding data back into the system. Also letting
people put videos/pictures on the opps, etc. Really making a robust system
on top of a robust feed.
We'll have more to share on that either today or over the weekend.

Anil,
Specifically, are you looking for information on the total
number of volunteer opportunities and how often that will update?
Adam or Aaron - is there a simple way to pull this stat from
your dashboard? Does it make sense to send it separate from the current API?

Hello Everyone,
We have a question :-
As we can see in mocks - tracker is changing, so what will
be the frequency of this change? Can you guys please also send the api
which shows the ticker? we are not able to find this in feed. Also what
will happen when user will click on "I want to serve too" (mock 2) - will
it redirect the user to the all for good website?

Hello Everyone -
Wanted to say hello and chime in on Rajiv's question
re: the nature of the gadget.
For the current mockups the objective is to promote
volunteerism by giving people a way to find volunteer opportunities in
their area. Specifically the gadget...
- presents a ticker that displays the number of
volunteer opportunities currently available via the footprint/All for Good API
- Prompts users to enter their zip code to get
information about what opportunities are going to be available in their area.
The goal for future iterations of the gadget is to
promote more specific actions (e.g. collecting and distributing books to
promote literacy, planting of community gardens) and display metrics as to
the efficacy of those efforts (e.g. # of books distributed, square feet of
gardens planted). For these versions of the gadget a reporting system will
be required.
@Ginny - anything I left out?
Very excited to be working with everyone on this and I
look forward to your thoughts!

Hello Ginny:
On our end we will move forward with
wireframes and designs reflecting the information you provided and work on
other reporting ideas. Also, great news about the availability of the API.
Re: designs, our first pass are available
here:

Re: the developer, please connect away!
Always helpful to have the perspective of the developer.
Thanks!
Kate
p.s. Brittany and Jonathan are added to the

Hi Kate,
Apologies for my delay, this all looks
fantastic. I'm adding Brittany Bohnet, lead on marketing for All for Good
and for iGoogle - good combo.
One note is that we're also talking to
HuffingtonPost about promotions. Ideally they could promote your gadgets
and apps? You might already have this nailed down?
Other answers in line below.
For the "how to help" tab, we can
populate with opportunities based on IP address - similar to this simple
gadget one of our developers put together -- link.
I also attached a list of topics and
projects that will be promoted through CNCS -- note that they wrote down
the types of metrics that would be useful to collect, but they haven't come
up with a reporting system. I'm going to start a shared doc to brainstorm
how to promote these activities [ex: display map of all libraries in the US
tied to asking ppl to donate books], and ideally you can start to tackle
reporting ideas [you have the most creative, practical ideas I've seen!].
Happy to connect you with that
developer directly if helpful.

Hello Ginny -
Hope you had a great week. Wanted
to reach out regarding several points....
First, we've completed some
wireframes for the gadgets and will be passing these on to our designers.
(images attached and added to Google site). We will have draft designs for
these by Wednesday 6/3.
Wireframes available here:
https://sites.google.com/a/causecast.org/google-service-gadgets/wireframes
Thanks for adding my gmail, can you
also add Brittany and Jonathan, Cc'ed?
Second, wanted to continue the
discussion about the objective(s) of the gadgets (e.g. promote
volunteerism) and the type of information we should highlight. Here are
some ideas we have drafted....
1. Promote Volunteering / # of
people volunteering at this moment -- yes, this would be "signed up" right?
Can we add -# of volunteer
opportunities people are "sharing" as seen by the "like" function?
1. Promote Volunteering / # of
volunteer opportunities listed online
2. Promote Volunteering / # of
volunteer opportunities in your area
3. Conserve Water / # of gallons
of water flushed down the toilet
4. Recycle Plastic Bottles / #
of plastic bottles entering landfills
5. Promote mentoring / $'s spent
on keeping people in juvenile detention facilities
6. Promote mentoring / cost of
housing a person in jail for a year vs. cost of after school programs
7. Donate money for the purchase
of mosquito nets / # of deaths due to malaria vs. # of deaths prevented by
distributing mosquito nets
8. Promote tutoring / # of
students not reading at grade level
9. Deter littering or beach
cleanups / lbs. of trash being released into the ocean in the past X amount
of time
also listed here:
https://sites.google.com/a/causecast.org/google-service-gadgets/data
Would very much like your feedback.
Third, what are your thoughts on
reaching out to the Summer of Service / CNCS camp to see what information
they can provide?
Finally, is there a timeline
associated with the announcement of the All for Good API? We're enforcing
radio silence on our end, but wanted to see if there was a date set for
going public.
We probably won't "announce" the API
until June 22. But we're in the process of finalizing the API ToS, which
should allow you to be up and running soon. Ideally by early next week.
Hope you have a great weekend!
