dates should be formatted to US standard (MM/DD/YY) padding with zeroes, e.g. 09/05/2009 #435

rofl, the gadget appears to be using european style (dd/mm/yyyy) without
zero padding.

alternatively, Mmm D, YYYY is short a user friendly, e.g. Sep 8, 2009
or Sep8'09 if we're tight on space.
