They is used here to be gender neutral, not to denote the plural. Example: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singular_they

I do not know if ASAM has any specific rules for this case. If not, I would vote for keeping this form over using "he/she", particularly as it also is also (as far as I understand) acceptable to address non-binary people where traditional gender forms do not really apply.
