Your device might be too weak to decode 1080P using software decoding.

And also i have the same problem with 720p. I am using raspberry pi3 and also ı can watch 1080p with iptv without any problem.

IPTV does not uses DASH codec that is a SW based encryption and codification, RPI has HW codec for MPEG and VC1, so it does not work with HW, Netflix depends 100% on SW, codec, so 720p should work with some flickering randomly, but works pretty good, I also will suggest to use MMAL Player instead of OMX, so disable it on Player options.

I confirm that on raspberryPi 3 1080p will not work and 720p will make the video freeze from time to time.

I also am getting issues of stutter, slow down and (on pause) black screen with Rpi2 on the newest version. Happened since last week or so...
