I've done this via a haml template and it works (almost) beautifully. I'll tidy it up and resubmit it eventually because I think we could do with some more examples of templates overriding the converter. However at the moment I don't fully understand the way templates work and I have a slightly odd behaviour which I need to debug. So we'll close this one.
