R Installation fails due to missing bzip2 headers and libraries despite following install instructions #9

Open gwpantazes opened 2 years ago

gwpantazes commented 2 years ago

Not sure if this is a bug that can be fixed for many people, or if I'm just being dumb.

asdf install R <version> fails due to missing bzip2 headers/libraries.

asdf install R 3.6.3
...
checking whether bzip2 support suffices... configure: error: bzip2 library and headers are required

Expected Result

If bzip2 is installed via Homebrew and available on the PATH, the installation should not fail due to not finding bzip2 library and headers.

Steps I've taken to fix/debug already:

  1. Followed the install instructions on the README: https://github.com/asdf-community/asdf-r/blob/master/README.md - brew install gcc xz libxt cairo
  2. I installed bzip2 directly - brew install bzip2. I also made sure bzip2 was on the PATH environment variable. I did this by running which bzip2 and bzip2 --version from a fresh command line.
  3. I tried the additional environment configurations mentioned from the README "More details on environment variables setup for Mac OS builds can be found https://github.com/asdf-community/asdf-R/pull/2#issue-615542640."

System Information

Got the same bzip2 configuration error on two machines:

  1. MacOS Catalina 10.15.7
  2. MacOS Monterey 12.3.1

Have the same issue.

bzip2 is definitely installed (with homebrew) and both PATH and FLAGS were updated

$ which bzip2

bzip2, a block-sorting file compressor. Version 1.0.8, 13-Jul-2019
gwpantazes commented 2 years ago

Note that bzip2 from Homebrew has the following caveats:

==> Caveats
bzip2 is keg-only, which means it was not symlinked into /usr/local,
because macOS already provides this software and installing another version in
parallel can cause all kinds of trouble.

If you need to have bzip2 first in your PATH, run:
  echo 'export PATH="/usr/local/opt/bzip2/bin:$PATH"' >> ~/.zshrc

For compilers to find bzip2 you may need to set:
  export LDFLAGS="-L/usr/local/opt/bzip2/lib"
  export CPPFLAGS="-I/usr/local/opt/bzip2/include"

I tried exporting the above and running the asdf install R command, but it failed in the same place.

export PATH="/usr/local/opt/bzip2/bin:$PATH"
export LDFLAGS="-L/usr/local/opt/bzip2/lib"
export CPPFLAGS="-I/usr/local/opt/bzip2/include"
asdf install R 3.6.3
# same result
checking whether bzip2 support suffices... configure: error: bzip2 library and headers are required

However, I am unsure if the exported environment variables are affecting the make that's happening in the asdf install. I have a feeling that this way of supplying the flags is incorrect for this case, but I'm still looking further into it.
