asdf logo? #1348

Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe

image

I love using asdf, but icon themes for text editors do not contain icons for .tool-versions file.

Describe the proposed solution

Does asdf have its own logo?

If yes, I could make icons based on it and create pull requests in the repository with icon themes

Describe similar asdf features and why they are not sufficient

-

Describe other workarounds you've considered

We've not had time to focusing on branding for asdf. I'd love to have a nice logo and icon for the project, as well as a color scheme for the project (for use on the website and readme).

If you want to take a shot at this you are welcome to! Obviously design stuff is subject to the normal PR review process, but if you've got some ideas on an asdf logo please share!

/me brushes the dust off this

Oh, hello @Stratus3D 👋

Chiming in to say I'm game for adding some design flair to asdf if you're still interested. I should have time over the weekend to throw some initial ideas over the wall, and we can go from there.

Unrelated, but was trying to check out your portfolio from your 3D Models page to get your design taste — but got a lil File not found. Figured you might want to know, if you weren't aware of it already 🙃 image

Perfect timing! I was actually thinking about this today. We'd love some ideas from you @spjpgrd !

Today I was thinking about how "asdf" kinds of means nothing - it's not an acronym, it's not meant to be pronounced as a word. It's just a-s-d-f with no deeper meaning. I think with branding we need something more concrete, something more physical and down to earth in order to be memorable. I'm not really sure what that would be since "version manager" isn't really something that has an analog equivalent. Those are my thoughts just from today, your the designer so you should definitely go with what you think should be best and take what I say with a grain of salt.

Please don't refer to my blog for design taste. It's a bit bland (which is ok for my tech blog, but not for most other things) and many of those pages haven't been updated in a decade. Thanks for taking a look at the blog and reporting that dead link though - I "refactored" the design a little this last weekend - I wouldn't be surprised if you found more than one issue. I'll get that link fixed.

@HashNuke @jthegedus got any suggestions/requests for @spjpgrd ?

By the way, when I thought about asdf logo, I initially thought it looked like Make or Ramda logos. For some reason, I had such an association

Do you mean like a Gnu or Ram animals?

azat-io commented 1 year ago

Yep

Stratus3D commented 1 year ago

That had not come to mind, but that would be a good way of putting an image in people's heads of something physical when they see the logo. The gnu logo is very memorable (though it's maybe not the best designed logo overall).

jthegedus commented 1 year ago

I always thought of a circle logo of the LHS of a keyboard with ASDF keys filled in with other keys outlined, pretty bland. I'm excited to see what an actual designer comes up with!

Tried to generate with Midjourney 😄

Tried to generate with Midjourney smile

I appreciate your effort, but in the final product, I'd prefer not to have an AI-generated logo

Stratus3D commented 1 year ago

@azat-io I don't see any reason why we can't use AI-generation to come up with something that gets us 99% of the way there.

I'm waiting to see if @spjpgrd will have anything for us soon.

We need more than an icon though. We need a logo (name + icon), and a color scheme to really complete branding for asdf.

spjpgrd commented 1 year ago

Hi there.

I'm sorry for the delay, but my company had a round of layoffs and it sorta threw my world for an unexpected spin.

I've blocked time tomorrow to twerk on this 🕺

I'm thinking what if we do something related to the sort of alphabet blocks like this:

360_F_42589253_GBgVU6RLa89yEdNLM7SOGKzM7h3PMUOS

Quickly sketching something, perhaps it may look like the following (I guess with brighter colors, more colors, and a smaller gap between the two sides?):

asdf

If we need something small enough for a code icon, maybe I can create a single block and have the letters "ASD" on each of the three sides?

If people like this, I was planning on doing it in Blender, so it will be super easy to change the colors once we finalize that

@hyperupcall How about if these squares look like keyboard keycaps? We typically use the keyboard to type out a-s-d-f.

hyperupcall commented 10 months ago

@akccakcctw I like that idea! It's kind of an obvious thing to do in hindsight. Maybe I could work on mocking something up if I get the time

I like this idea. So much so that I had already used it in a project about 18 months ago. So if people ever see that project, know I had already done it before this suggestion in this thread.
