Open GoogleCodeExporter opened 9 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
Enhancement request: outline view showing all files in the directory, just like
in the xcode or
textmate.

Please provide any additional information below.

Would be nice.

Matt Tolton has written a plugin architecture for MacVim and he provides one
example plugin called FileBrowser.
Search the vim_mac archives for "FileBrower" and you'll find the download and
hopefully some instructions on
how to use it. If you can't get it working, please ask for more information on
the vim_mac list so that Matt gets
a chance to answer your question.

just out of curiosity what would it take to adopt the plugin architecture to
macvim?

I'm afraid I don't understand the question: there already is a plugin
architecture in MacVim so what do you mean
by "adopt(ing) the plugin architecture"?

i just checked out the source and yes i did not know that macvim already has
one.
i was a bit confused since matt also made a couple of macvim patches when he
presented the sample filebrowser plugin.
i just tried it and it does "work" somewhat. let me rephrase the whole thing
then.
what would it take for you to drop the drawer and go for a sidebar instead?

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
At the moment, since there are no plugins, I see no reason to work on this.
Maybe if Matt continues working on
the plugin stuff and some actual plugins are written I'll get more involved in
this, but at this point in time I have
other things to work on.

I really think MacVim needs a good sidebar built into the GUI layer. Stuff like
nerdTREE simply doesn't cut it. The whole idea of MacVim seems to be to add a
nice
Mac-like layer on top of vim - that includes a project sidebar to view a
directory
tree like every other popular Mac text editor has. This really, really needs to
be
added to MacVim.

I agree with isaac.raway 100%...
if this is possible it would be a killer feature.

I completely agree with isaac.raway too. This would be a killer feature, I
cannot imagine how many developers would then move from TextMate to MacVim (all
of them!? :).

@alloy has a branch with a file browser:

https://github.com/alloy/macvim

He also provides pre-built binaries to try out.

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
What I meant was, any chance of something like that getting into regular
MacVim? Or is that something that you're unwilling to include?

Original comment by cweag...@gmail.com on 4 Aug 2011 at 8:32

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
Right now I have other things that I'd rather think about. Since @alloy is
providing binaries it is very easy for people to download and use, making it
less pressing for me to integrate into mainline.

Original comment by bjorn.winckler@gmail.com on 5 Aug 2011 at 12:13

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
Perhaps if @alloy's changes were integrated into the mainline, @alloy would be
freed up to help with other aspects of MacVim? I'm certain that getting through
the ticket log is a monumental task - having another person available to help
with such a task could be a rather large boon.

Aside from logistics, it seems as though a real Cocoa file manager pane is one
of those "killer features". Perhaps some people may not use it, but could they
not simply disable the functionality (or not use it)?

I'm a really long time vim user, but I must admit the lack of a file drawer (or
simple project management functionality) is probably what keeps me going back
to TextMate. Then I get annoyed with CrashMate and go back to MacVim.

It's a vicious cycle.

Hello there.

alloy's binaries seem to have gone AWOL with the latest Github layout changes
(they also removed file downloads and replaced them with "releases", but alloy
hasn't made one).

Will you revisit this issue, or should I send you a pull request on Github if I
succeed in merging his sidebar with the latest snapshot? (68)

HI Rui, would it be possible for you to provide a built binary of your branch?
Given that the PR isn't going to go anywhere... Thanks!
