You can knock out all of your video desires in one go with libmpv. It was remarkably easy to use, it has a per-frame callback and a function to draw into a given framebuffer. It even integrates youtube-dl if you're into that.

ah, interesting idea! i saw the mpv crate when scoping stuff out, but ignored it since the last release was 2 years ago.
