empty strings are not returned #42

when querying an entity with empty string values the values are not returned at 
all.

this is (currently) intentional behavior.  i'm pretty sure it was done for a 
reason, but at this point in time i'm not entirely sure what that reason was.  
i'm attempting to figure it out, will update if i can come up with anything.
