use <list> for metadata #66

Shouldn't metadata use <list> for consistency with other parts of the library?

although they are both "lists", they are conceptually different things (e.g. 
the metadata api doesn't offer paging).

regardless, in order to maintain backwards compatibility, i don't ever see this 
changing.
