Main Idea : LinkedIn Campus Chapter.

Introduction to Idea

Presently, there is a gap in industry and academia. Students face problems transitioning from college to a job. There is also difficulty contacting people for advice, most students resort to cold-emailing people or contacting alumni. We want to create an app and establish LinkedIn chapters in colleges. The app will facilitate the activities of this chapter.

About the Idea

Leaders of these LinkedIn chapters

We will use machine learning algorithms to analyze the LinkedIn network of students, alumni, professors of a college. Then using various parameters like work experience, volunteering activities, endorsements, profiles of people who have given them recommendation our app will filter out people of the specific college. These will be the type of people who are likely to take on leadership roles and have experience in leading an organization or club. We will contact them to establish chapters in their respective colleges.

Roles of the leaders

The leaders will be the maintainers/moderators of these chapters. They will be the point of contact for LinkedIn. They will select a number of students from there college (students who are presently studying) and these student leaders will also help in the activities of the LinkedIn chapters.

Who all will be a part of the LinkedIn Chapter?

Anyone who joins LinkedIn and their college is a part of a registered LinkedIn chapter will be automatically added. This means this chapter will be a place where all alumni and students can connect. Alternatively, alumni can contact LinkedIn to open chapters. After verification, they can start the chapter.

Features of our web portal

• Event Page: People in the chapter can post events that their companies are conducting in this page. Like a workshop by Microsoft or LinkedIn.
• Job Board: All the alumni can post vacancies in their respective companies here. It will also be easier for students to ask for referrals.
• Mentor me section: Alumni will volunteer to mentor students. Based on both of their interests, mentor and mentee will be matched.
• LinkedIn Connect Chapters (Only for LinkedIn chapter leaders): A page where LinkedIn leaders from different chapters can connect with each other so that they are aware of all activities.
• (?) Open to other features.

  • It will encourage more students to make/maintain LinkedIn accounts.

Technical Implementation

Finding Leaders

We will use Machine Learning in Python.

• Data : We will scrape data from LinkedIn.
• Feature engineering using features like experiences, volunteering activities, etc.
• Models : It will be a regression problem where we will train data on models like Logistic regression, Linear Regressrion, AdaBoost Regression followed by boosting and ensembling algorithms to predict the best leaders.

Web Portal

We will do the backend in Django following MVC architecture. We will use agile methods and test-driven development. We will use MongoDB for the database. Models that we will create are

• User model with attributes leader, other members. If a user is a chapter leader, leader attribute will be true and additional features like “Connect to other chapters” will be displayed.
• Model for Events, Schedule, etc.
• Messaging feature so that everyone can message each other. (? Should I put this)

Front-end of the portal

We will use Reactjs.

Future developments

• I think our basic idea is very simple. A website. Once we are done with the website, we will implement spam detection as well as set up bots that will instantly comment on offensive posts/languages.
• Maybe make a Google Action for our web portal. Will barely take an hour but sounds fancy :laughing:
• Account verification problem can be tackled.
• Think of ideas for tier 3 colleges or colleges with very few alumni.

1.For the messaging feature I think that it will be generic like a chat app. Can we think of some modifications for the chatting option? Otherwise we can discard this part or can see it in the end if time promotes.

2. We should keep spam detection feature as it is useful to filter the true data.
3. Backend we can go for Ruby on Rails. I am installing it now :p Rest everything seems fine. Good job @aSquare14
