Usually the cause is another extension, such as the editor JCE.
A possible solution would be not to select the GPX file via the Selectbutton, but to enter the path directly in the text field. For example

images/com_aggpxtrack/L1.gpx#joomlaImage://local-images/com_aggpxtrack/L1.gpx?width=0&height=0
Thereby L1.gpx is the name of the GPX file.

You can find the correct path via media manager:
The relevant part of the path is the part form images to the end of the filename:
