Maybe someone could try and build the astropy docs with both to see what it looks like? Not supporting a custom theme would be nice.

@saimn managed to get pydata-sphinx-theme applied to astropy over at https://github.com/astropy/astropy/pull/14477 but he concluded that we need to restructure the docs to really make it work.
