New Concept: Rotational light curve #282

Open katieefrey opened 5 years ago

Name the new concept Rotational light curve

Describe the concept Using light curves to determine rotation of an object, such as a planet, asteroid, etc, Related to a subset of photometry that could be known as "Surface photometry."

Describe where the concept fits within the existing hierarchy Child of "light curve," which is currently a child of "Photometry" a relationship that should probably be examined.

Light curve definition from Etymological Dictionary of Astronomy and Astrophysics is specific to variable stars, but the UAT definition is broader: "A graph of light intensity of a celestial object or region, as a function of time." There could be room for a child concept specific to variable stars and a child concept specific to rotation.

@sjarmak what do you think about adding rotational light curve?

Light curves Light curves http://astrothesaurus.org/uat/918 currently uses the Etymological Dictionary of Astronomy and Astrophysics definition of light curve, which is specific to variable stars. The placement of the concept under photometry appears to be more general and for which a broader definition from another source would be appropriate. If so, then rotational light curves and variable star light curves would be appropriate narrower terms.
