New Concept: Solar long-period intensity pulsation #352

Open patrickantolin opened 2 years ago

patrickantolin commented 2 years ago

Name the new concept Solar long-period intensity pulsation

Describe the concept The phenomenon corresponds to EUV pulsations in the solar corona, found in both active regions and quiet Sun regions. It is thought to be produced in coronal loops in a thermal non-equilibrium state. The periods are found in the range of hours (2 - 16 hours).

Describe where the concept fits within the existing hierarchy More General Concepts: Solar activity Related Concepts: Coronal rain

@ebortey could you please find a definition from an authoritative source?

This concept is related to proposed new concept solar coronal rain (Issue #351) but independent of it.

@katieefrey @danielchivvis are we ready to add this concept or do we want further heliophysics input?

After searching for some time, I couldn’t find any articles that give a full definition in a single quote but they instead somewhat describe bits of the concept piece by piece. The best description in one quote that I was able to find was:

“Using full disk SOHO/EIT data and later on SDO/AIA data, Auchère et al [49] and Froment et al [50], respectively, recently discovered a remarkable phenomenon in the solar atmosphere. Intensity pulsations in basically all of the instruments channels were discovered ubiquitously all over the Sun with varying periods of a few to tens of hours, lasting over several days. Roughly half of these events are located in active regions, where the pulsations concentrate over loop-like geometries.”
