Hi capx, if you guys are still looking to do this, I have a few suggestions that could be helpful in getting started with a forum. One of the more well known software for forums is vBulletin (https://www.vbulletin.com/) which uses PHP and MySQL. Alternatively you guys could also modify a pre-created template to your liking or just use a free service, which may be more cost effective for newer sites.
I've created a forum in the past and also have experience with moderating one as well, so I'm a little familiar with the front/back end tools and dashboards used with them. Feel free to reach out to me if you need any help!
