The related featured image for a publication object within the website has a hard association with an image that describes the research. This association isn't always correct, nor is it always easy to find an appropriate image to describe the publication.
In addition, the featured image within the template only supports linking to an uploaded file. If you wanted to link to a publicly available resource (pdf, web page or another image), you couldn't do it.
Let's redesign the template to be more flexible with the types of external associations with resources connected to the publication. Further enhancements of this idea will follow as additional comments within this thread.
